Suffered serious injuries when he was thrown over the safety fence and hit a lamp-post during an international speedway tournament in Brisbane, Australia, in December 1979. He sadly died in hospital 8 days later as a result of his injuries.
A memorial meeting was held in his name at Poole the following year, with Boby Kilby winning the trophy.
