• German rider Josef Angermuller is killed in a track crash during a World Championship preliminary round in Civitta Nuova, Italy. The ex-Hull rider crashed with Bulgarian Angel Eftimov in heat 12.
• Georg Hack wins the World Championship preliminary round in Bopfingen, Germany. Hack's 15-point maximum gave him a 1-point advantage over Czech Jiri Jirout
• NL newcomers Newport are closing in on the signing of veteran Mike Broadbank
• Reading release Ian Gledhill and Bo Jansson and are to give extended runs to Glyn Taylor and Hans Wassermann
