- German rider Josef Angermuller is killed in a track crash during a World Championship preliminary round in Civitta Nuova, Italy. The ex-Hull rider crashed with Bulgarian Angel Eftimov in heat 12.
- Georg Hack wins the World Championship preliminary round in Bopfingen, Germany. Hack's 15-point maximum gave him a 1-point advantage over Czech Jiri Jirout
